IATMJ - Overview
I Am The Mighty Jungulator are a hybrid arts collective with a diverse portfolio of innovative projects. Their audio engine, described as 'the sonic philosopher's stone' by Future Music magazine, forms the core of an audio visual performance system for schools, developed with Futurelab (National Endowment For Science, Technology and The Arts). The IATMJ band won best new electronic act at the 2004 Diesel New Music Awards, and have presented live audiovisual spectacles at Rotterdam Film Festival, Tate Britain, The Science Museum's Dana Centre, The Port Elliot Literary Festival, The Cheltenham Science Festival, amongst others. Their generative, audio-visual systems have been exhibited at digital arts festivals, and enabled production of community portraits with young people from disadvantaged local areas. They recently re-scored a classic zombie film for a multi-platform mystery tour, 're-imagined' Shostakovich's 6th Symphony in octophonic sound with The London Philharmonia Orchestra, designed international dance DJ Nick Warrens' new tour video, and are due to release the world’s first generative single.
Live performance
IATMJ as a live unit produce a seamless audio visual spectacular. Using midi bass and electric guitar mixed and manipulated by their own proprietary software, live visuals are synced, created and mixed into a complete and coherent live performance. They have recently premiered their new show at the Bath International Music Festival, have “re-imagined” Shostakovich's 6th Symphony (with the London Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy), and rocked out at the Tate Gallery, London. Winning the ‘Diesel Nu-Music Award’ for left field electronics, IATMJ have been in great demand at art events, London clubs and festivals around the UK.
VJ
As well as being integral to the IATMJ performance, IATMJ are also first choice VJs for other artists and clubs. They use a mixture of innovative live visuals (wormcam), bespoke self generative visual programs and their own VJ software, ‘derek and norma olden’. IATMJ have VJ’d at The Big Chill Festival (2002-05), Port Elliot Literature Festival and are currently providing visuals for international DJ Nick Warren.
Installation
IATMJ self generative audiovisual engines are also used as installation artworks in their own right. They have been exhibited at cybersonica 05, and awarded development funding by UK Arts Council to produce an online audio visual mix for The Watershed Media Centre (Bristol). They have also been commissioned by the BBC to produce a self generative mix of their Wildlife Archive. IATMJ self generative engines can be also be used to produce an audio visual mix of your festival, taking both audio and video footage from participants and the audience.
Workshops
IATMJ software is a popular shareware download. It has been demonstrated at the Royal Festival Hall ‘Etherfest’ alongside Tangerine Dream, cybersonica 2005 and the ICA. With support from nesta futurelab (National Endowment For Science and Technology) IATMJ have produced a combined audio visual version of the software currently being used by teachers and students in UK schools. The software is regularly praised for its unique ability to enable beginners to produce self generative music and visuals in a fast and friendly environment, whilst remaining sophisticated enough to give the electronic music expert true creative freedom of expression. It offers a new narrative model and an exciting, fluid way of producing autonomous art work.
Running workshops in local areas IATMJ have rewritten education models for audio visual learning. Using their innovative software they have produced community portraits and engaged local youth with their fierce ‘do it yourself’ work ethic. Through the success of these workshop IATMJ have been invited to demonstrate their education models in a series of highly successful workshops at the UK Film Education Council, and cinemas and media centres around the country.
